Diamond came prepared with specific verses and hadiths and pressed Fikret hard, getting him to admit he had not studied evolution closely and getting weak answers on a few items like the fly hadith. But Fikret held the core of his position: he reframed the whole question around how 'science' is even defined, argued that hadith texts are not transmitted word-for-word and so interpretation is legitimate, and used Ghazali to show that flexible reading is a general feature of Arabic, not a trick Muslims invented to dodge science. Diamond never pinned him to a clean contradiction, and several of Fikret's defenses — that science does not deal with angels and demons, and that the sun-setting verse is being mistranslated — stood. Neither man was clearly dominant, so the edge goes to the Muslim debater.
