HEATED DEBATE! Does Islam Need the Hadith? The Orthodox Muslim Vs Waleed Naeem
The case is decided
It wasThe Orthodox Muslim.
The Orthodox Muslim controlled the debate by pressing Waleed Naeem on historical continuity and early practice, and Waleed repeatedly conceded that he could not name anyone in the first centuries who held his Quran-only view of halal and haram. Waleed’s strongest move, the Omar hadith about the Quran being sufficient, backfired because he admitted it did not explicitly say Omar rejected the Sunnah, and The Orthodox Muslim showed Omar was otherwise attested as accepting it. Waleed also shifted ground to “history is disputable” and personal Quranic principles rather than answering where the Quran identifies the authenticated reports or books he would follow. The Orthodox Muslim’s case that the Quran assumes an authoritative Sunnah was better supported by his historical evidence and by the concessions he drew out.
